In the summer semester 2025, an educational series on the topics of anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim racism will take place. As part of the educational series, we want to look at forms of discrimination in relation to our everyday lives and current political world events.

08.07. How to: Discuss Racism and Antisemitism in you Everyday Life
Can one be racist and against antisemitism?
Can one be racist and still against antisemitism?
or be Antisemitic and anti-racist?
Is there a hierarchy in racism, and is antisemitism part of it?
Are racism and antisemitism inherently different enough to analytically, empirically and politically distinct them?
What challenges emerge from the separation of antisemitism and racism for the building of solidarity in a time of escalating violence?
In this workshop we want to approach these questions and the complex histories of racisms, learn about the conflicts surrounding the relationship between antisemitism and other forms of racism.
Benjamin Opratko is a researcher (post-doc) at Leuphana University’s Institute for Sociology and Cultural Organization (ISKO). His research topics include racism and antisemitism in Europe.

How to: discrimination-sensitive & racism-critical education
[Theoretical impulses and practical case work on anti-Muslim racism in schools] with Dennis Barasi
The event begins with a lecture as a theoretical introduction to the topics of racism and anti-Muslim racism in the school context. We will then look at specific manifestations of anti-Muslim racism in the classroom and reflect on how it is anchored in the institutional structures of schools. Practical examples will also be used to discuss how anti-Muslim racism operates and is reproduced in everyday school life. Finally, the participants will work together on a case study to develop possible courses of action for dealing with situations relevant to anti-Muslim racism in a professional and discrimination-sensitive manner.

About Antisemitismus
[An introduction to forms and narratives of historical and modern anti-Semitism] with Jan Weyand
AStA education series: On anti-Semitism with Jan Weyand (lecturer in sociology)
What is anti-Semitism? At first glance, it seems clear: hostility towards Jews. At second glance, it becomes complicated and controversial, as the current dispute over an appropriate definition of anti-Semitism shows. At the centre of this dispute is the distinction between illegitimate anti-Semitism and legitimate criticism of Israeli policy. The lecture takes this dispute as its starting point, develops a concept of anti-Semitism, presents this using historical material and, on this basis, distinguishes between anti-Semitism and ‘criticism of Israel’.

Anti-Muslim racism
An interactive introduction to forms, narratives and social effects with Mohammed Chahrour
📅 Date: [Monday 02.06.2025]
📍 Location: [TRAFOS]
🕓 Time: [19:00]
🎟️ Open to all – admission free
Anti-Muslim racism has long since ceased to be a marginalised phenomenon – it pervades social debates, political decisions and media narratives. But what exactly distinguishes anti-Muslim racism from Islamophobia? What historical developments characterise today’s image? And which terms and images continue to have an impact in everyday life without being immediately recognised as discriminatory?
The AStA’s project series on anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim racism begins with a first interactive event with Mohammed Chahrour on the topic of “anti-Muslim racism”. This event can serve as a starting point for you to better understand racism and discrimination against Arabs and Muslims.
As a full-time counsellor for victims of right-wing and racist violence, Mohammed Chahrour regularly gives workshops on (anti-Muslim) racism in order to impart strategies and methods that are critical of racism not only academically but also realistically.
This introductory event offers an interactive introduction to the topic. Together we will take a look at:
- Terms and definitions: Anti-Muslim racism vs. Islamophobia
- Historical developments & milestones
- Powerful narratives and buzzwords: Orientalism, terrorism, etc.
- Anti-Arab vs. anti-Muslim stereotypes
- Political debates & legislation with a racist impact
- Media coverage of Muslims and ‘migrants’
- Cultural appropriation & cultural representation
The aim of the event is to make anti-Muslim racism visible in its various forms – in public discourse, in political structures and in everyday life. Participants should learn to recognise, name and critically question discriminatory patterns.
Format: In addition to expert input from an experienced counsellor for victims of right-wing and racist violence, the event offers space for exchange, discussion and a variety of perspectives.
