UPDATE and template: Certificate of extension of the standard period of study

Last updated 5. March 2025 | Sprecherinnen

Today we actually received the long-awaited statement from the university on how the extension of the standard period of study will be implemented here. Student Services will implement the extension of the individual standard period of study for students enrolled at the University of Lüneburg automatically and without further queries. If you were or will be obliged to pay long-term tuition fees for the first time according to the previous regulation within the period SoSe 2020 up to and including SoSe 2021, the extension of the individual standard period of study usually leads to the elimination of the obligation to pay long-term tuition fees for one semester. In this case, please apply to Student Services for a refund of any excess long-term tuition fees paid. For students who were already obliged to pay long-term tuition fees before the SoSe 2020, there is still the possibility of a fee waiver for reasons of hardship. You can find the text modules for a hardship application here: https://www.asta-lueneburg.de/post/textbausteine-fuer-haertefallantraege-5089/ If you have any questions regarding long-term tuition fees etc., please contact Student Services.

As long as the resolution has not yet been implemented, you can temporarily use the following paragraph, which was sent to all students in today’s email from the Presidential Board:

“At the end of last year, the state of Lower Saxony decided to amend the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act to extend the standard period of study by one semester for students enrolled in the summer semester 2020, winter semester 2020/21 or summer semester 2021 who are not on leave of absence in order to compensate for pandemic-related disadvantages. The extension of the individual standard period of study also has a particular effect on the assessment of the study credit according to §12 NHG and thus on the period in which no long-term tuition fees are charged by the state.

As a rule, Leuphana’s Student Services will automatically extend the standard period of study for students enrolled at Leuphana without further inquiry. Since the extension of the standard period of study only applies to students for whom a comparable extension has not already been applied at a university or for a degree program in another federal state, the Student Service will contact you in individual cases with any queries. If you have any questions or uncertainties in individual cases, please contact the student administration staff responsible for you at Student Services.” (Email: Informationen für Studierende zu Prüfungen im laufenden Wintersemester 2020/21 sowie zur Verlängerung der Regelstudienzeit / Information for students on examinations in the current winter semester 2020/21 and on extending the standard period of study, dated 26.01.2020)
