On March 25th, we occupied the streets again to demonstrate for peace &amp; (climate) justice. During such global climate strikes, we often feel a special energy: we feel less alone with our <\/span><b>fears<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>despair<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, briefly forgetting our feelings of <\/span><b>powerlessness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This gives us strength and <\/span><b>hope<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> again \u270a<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But it can certainly happen that we feel overwhelmed and lame in the face of the climate and biodiversity crisis, as well as other <\/span><b>major crises <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of our times (not least the pandemic and the war in Ukraine). <\/span><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What to do when all of a sudden it becomes <\/span><\/i><b><i>too much?<\/i><\/b><\/li><li><b><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What <\/span><\/i><b><i>coping strategies<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> do I have at my disposal?<\/span><\/i><\/li><li><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where can I ask for help when my personal resources are not enough?<\/span><\/i><\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p>A comprehensive answer to these questions would go beyond the scope of this newsletter, but it is important to us to provide you with some resources and basics tips to take care of yourself \ud83e\udd17&#013;\n<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Climate anxiety, &#8220;<\/b><b><i>solastalgia<\/i><\/b><b>&#8220;, \u201c<\/b><b><i>Weltschmerz<\/i><\/b><b>\u201d (&#8220;worldsuffering&#8221;) &amp; Co: the psychological consequences of the climate &amp; biodiversity crisis. <\/b><\/h4>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In recent years, various terms have become widespread in an attempt to describe the range of <\/span><b>psychological issues<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> caused by environmental change and destruction. Recently, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emphasized in its latest Assessment Report (February, 2022) that climate adaptation measures must take into account, among other things, the psychological consequences of climate change, since it leads to increasing psychological challenges, stress, and anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The climate crisis is already leading to <\/span><b>post-traumatic stress disorder <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><b>depression<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, especially among communities affected by extreme weather events or evictions. <\/span><b>MAPA<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (&#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most Affected People &amp; Areas&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) face direct traumatic experiences such as destruction, loss, or abandonment of their homes. The word &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">solastalgia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8221; accurately describes the pain and grief of losing one&#8217;s environment and its security (Albrecht, 2006).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#013;\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u27a1\ufe0f <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CZCWvFftvzM\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is MAPA? (@fridaysforfuturemapa)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In particular, people who are intensely concerned with the climate and biodiversity crisis, climate justice and sustainability often feel burdened by various unpleasant feelings: hopelessness, overwhelm, anger against inaction, sadness, powerlessness, despair&#8230;. These various facets of climate anxiety are often triggered and reinforced by<\/span><b> information overload. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Therefore, we think it is important to point you to these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deutschlandfunknova.de\/beitrag\/corona-anschlag-katastrophe-tipps-f%C3%BCr-bewusste-nachrichtennutzung\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tips for conscious and targeted consumption of news.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \ud83d\udcf2 These tips are in German but here you can find a similar and more specific article in English <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.headspace.com\/stress\/news-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How to Deal With News Anxiety &#8211; Headspace<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\ud83c\udfac <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/LUfhOPrliFk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Klimaangst &amp; Co. \u2013 Die psychischen Folgen der Klimakrise \u2013 Hannah Klenk \u2013 Public Climate School<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (in German)<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\ud83d\udcc4 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spektrum.de\/news\/klimaangst-wie-wir-emotional-mit-der-klimakrise-umgehen\/1942630\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Klimaangst: Wie wir emotional mit der Klimakrise umgehen &#8211; Spektrum der Wissenschaft<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(in German)<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Doubts about studies &amp; activism\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From conversations in our circles, we have noticed that insecurities and fears about our present and future often lead people to question the meaning of their own studies, commitment and activism. <\/span><b><i>Why am I doing \/ learning this for?<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Especially among students who deal a lot with sustainability and questions of the great transformation, climate anxiety and similar emotions are becoming more and more present \ud83e\udd14 If this is also the case for you, you can, for example, turn to the university&#8217;s Student Counselling Service service or take advantage of one of the assistance and counseling services offered by the Psychologists and Psychotherapists for Future (see below). <\/span><\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Personal experience &amp; tips for dealing with global crises.<\/b><\/h4>\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;The worst moments for me are when I realize that all of our crises are somehow connected. It&#8217;s that <\/span><\/i><b><i>complexity<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which overwhelms me. The feeling of being stuck in a dead end. Sometimes I have the impression that the more I inform myself about the state of our planet and our society, the <\/span><\/i><b><i>more hopeless<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> I become. In the last few months, I have learned to identify my <\/span><\/i><b><i>coping mechanisms<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to such uncomfortable feelings: for example, I love listening to podcasts, yet I don&#8217;t feel like listening to podcasts about sustainability or climate. I&#8217;m afraid I&#8217;ll get triggered by them again, even though some podcasts actually have positive messages. Basically, I <\/span><\/i><b><i>avoid<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> dealing with the climate &amp; biodiversity crisis any further. That&#8217;s why I want to find a way to deal with global crises and information overload. How can I turn this fear into power to engage further? I feel this is a <\/span><\/i><b><i>process<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which will accompany me my whole life. So far, I have identified the following aspects that are <\/span><\/i><b><i>important to me<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in a healthy approach to the climate crisis and other global crises.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u26a0\ufe0f <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Disclaimer: these coping strategies are in no way a substitute for professional guidance, but are intended as a low-threshold self-care. It is important that everyone finds their own approaches that are good for them and can best help them. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\ud83d\udea6 Pay attention to my <\/span><b>resources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where do I put my energy? How can I balance things by taking breaks and spending my free time? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It&#8217;s not selfish at all to withdraw and leave tasks to others. &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Self-care, of course, does not exclude caring for others and the planet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8221; (from the episode &#8220;Self-Care&#8221; from the podcast &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Klima im Kopf&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) <\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Introduce an &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">energy level check<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;, paired with a specific action in your everyday life: e.g. if you have to wait at a red traffic-light, ask yourself what your energy level for different activities is at the moment.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\ud83d\udd90\ufe0f Experience<\/span><b> self-efficacy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where can &amp; do I want to get involved?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> At the local, regional, global level&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\ud83d\udd1d Setting <\/span><b>priorities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in one&#8217;s own commitment: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How much of my time do I want to dedicate to a project? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I don&#8217;t have to get involved in all kinds of actions when I realize it&#8217;s going to be too much. In this case, quality is more important to me than quantity. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\ud83d\udcfb Paying attention to my <\/span><b>news consumption<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where &amp; how long a day do I inform myself? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pay attention to unconscious coping mechanisms such as avoidance \/ repression!<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u270d\ufe0f <\/span><b>Process feelings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> e.g. through mindfulness exercises, journaling, artistic pursuits (collage, crafts,&#8230;), spending time in nature,&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this thorough <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/english.psychologistsforfuture.org\/climate-psychology\/climate-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">introduction to climate anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> you can find more thoughts on how to deal with anxiety, not only on the <\/span><b>individual<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> level, but also on the <\/span><b>group<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>societal<\/b> <b>level<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. As we wrote in the first newsletter on exam anxiety, &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">shared stress &#8211; half the stress&#8221;.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Especially when you feel overwhelmed, just having the courage to <\/span><b>share<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> your <\/span><b>fears<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with others can help. Especially in engagement groups, the time for sharing can be too short, when you are busy with planning, orga, requests, public relations &amp; Co. Therefore, it can be very helpful and <\/span><b>reassuring<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to consciously take time to talk about <\/span><b>worries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>uncertainties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
