At first glance, it seems clear: hostility towards Jews. At second glance, it becomes complicated and controversial, as the current dispute over an appropriate definition of anti-Semitism shows. At the centre of this dispute is the distinction between illegitimate anti-Semitism and legitimate criticism of Israeli policy. The lecture takes this dispute as its starting point, develops a concept of anti-Semitism, presents this using historical material and, on this basis, distinguishes between anti-Semitism and ‘criticism of Israel’.

Where? But what exactly distinguishes anti-Muslim racism from Islamophobia? What historical developments characterise today’s image? And which terms and images continue to have an impact in everyday life without being immediately recognised as discriminatory?

The AStA’s project series on anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim racism begins with a first interactive event with Mohammed Chahrour on the topic of “anti-Muslim racism”. This event can serve as a starting point for you to better understand racism and discrimination against Arabs and Muslims.

As a full-time counsellor for victims of right-wing and racist violence, Mohammed Chahrour regularly gives workshops on (anti-Muslim) racism in order to impart strategies and methods that are critical of racism not only academically but also realistically.

This introductory event offers an interactive introduction to the topic.
